Amenorrhea is induced when the patient drops 15% or more below her ideal body weight, resulting in central nervous system-hypothalamic dysfunction, pituitary gonadotrophin function dysfunctional and abnormalities, bone density loss, malnutrition and much more. The same is true of both patients who induce amenorrhea either by design (i.e., eating disorder) or circumstance (i.e., female athlete triad; ballerinas, etc. etc.).
